We breed mainly to maintain our own milk supply but do have kids, and occasionally adult goats, available to good homes from time to time. If you are interested in purchasing a goat from our farm please contact us by email, or through our farm Facebook page, to discuss your needs.
We are mindful that we are breeding on a small island and try to ensure that good homes are available for any kids we bring into this world. Goats can live from 8-15 years so they should not be an impulse purchase. Our kids are generally dam raised but taught to accept the bottle at a young age. That means our kids are healthy and friendly but also know how to 'be a goat'. Our herd is tested for CAE, CL, and Johne's. If you are shopping for a goat please consider buying from a tested herd, even if it is not mine, in order to give your goat the best start in life.
If you are not interested in milking then please consider a wether. A wether is a castrated male and they make the very best pets. They do not develop the beard, or stink!, of an intact male and they do not stomp and scream like does in heat. They are generally friendly, easy going, easy keepers. The main thing to be aware of is a painful and potentially deadly complication called urinary calculi that can easily be avoided by not feeding too much grain and selecting a ration that is formulated with ammonium chloride.
It is important to us that our goats go to good homes. Good homes will be able to provide the companionship of at least one other goat, a secure (dog proof) fenced area, a rain-proof shelter, adequate feed and water, veterinary care as needed, and love 💗. Goats are herd animals. A single goat will not be happy and is likely be more trouble than you can imagine. Dogs are not suitable companions for goats. The exception to this would be a well trained livestock guardian dog who lives with your herd.
Does in milk may be available from time to time. They will be trained to the milk stand and pricing will be discussed upon availability. If you see someone you are interested in, please let me know. Intact bucks will rarely be offered for sale due to the age of our young herd. Breeding bucks should be selected based on their ability to improve the breed and it takes several years to prove out the dam. If you are intent on owning your own buck please contact us to discuss, there may be options available.
Our pricing reflects the quality of our herd as well as the cost and difficulty of bringing these goats to Maui. Our intention is to offer our goats at a fair price to like-minded folks who can provide good homes.
Our goats will be registered with ADGA, disbudded, tattooed, and will receive at least one CDT and coccidia treatment before leaving for their new homes. Wethers are castrated at 8 weeks, or later, using a Burdizzo with local anesthetic. This is a little more trouble for us but we find it to be a very safe and humane procedure. Wethers will not be registered and are generally not tattooed. Goats may be microchipped upon request.
We are usually very busy working or attending to the farm so the best way to contact us is by email at Kahalawaifarm@gmail.com Please tell us a little bit about yourselves and especially, your goats!
